How to Cook a Whole Country Ham:
There are a few great ways to prepare a whole country ham — here's a classic method that brings out its full flavor.
- Soak the ham: Place your ham in cold water for 12–24 hours to reduce saltiness. Change the water every 4–6 hours.
- Prep the oven: Preheat to 325°F. Place the ham on a rack in a deep roasting pan and add 1–2 inches of water. Cover tightly with foil.
- Bake it low and slow: Cook for about 20 minutes per pound, or until the internal temp reaches 160°F.
- Optional glaze: Want extra flavor? Mix brown sugar and apple cider vinegar and brush it on. Put the ham back in the oven at 400°F for 15–20 minutes to caramelize.
- Rest, then carve: Let the ham rest for 20–30 minutes. Slice it thin and serve warm — or save leftovers for biscuits, beans, or breakfast hash.
This isn't just a meal — it's a tradition you can cook, carve, and be proud to serve.
